The motivation for the last entries came from the completion of a couple of books and as an update, there was a fourth. This one was about the trucking in USA and took considerably more time and effort to produce. However, once again it was really satisfying to have it completed and shelved with the others. To read on a rainy day perhaps.

Time passes quickly when you stop taking notice and for the last two years we've been occupied with heading away either cycling or hiking somewhere within weekend distance of Tauranga. We upgraded our camper van last year and 'Fries', our Mitsubishi Fuso camper has made it so much easier to head away, sometimes on a Friday evening and sometimes early Saturday. The cycling, although still very enjoyable, took a bit of a dive after a couple of injuries and as a result we started to spend more time in walking boots. Needless to say, the appeal of the bush trails, particularly around the Kaimai Ranges has sparked an interest in seeing more of NZ by foot. Earlier this year we walked the Heaphy track taking 5 days and making good use of the wonderful DOC huts along the way. Despite being a bit foot sore by the end of the trail we were still keen to pursue an idea that had been hatching for the last year and that is to tackle the Te Araroa trail, a continuous 3000 km walking trail and the ultimate 5 month NZ great walk.

You must be mad, some say. Maybe they are right but our current plan, based on plenty of consideration and planning, is to complete the Te Araroa trail this summer coming. I have been lucky enough to get 6 months leave without pay (they wouldn't pay me to go) and we will start 'the long walk' in early October from Cape Reinga with the goal of finishing in Bluff in March 2017.
My thoughts are to keep a Facebook page and I'm not sure about using this blog also to record the trip but will listen to any feedback.

We have the added advantage of friends Kath and Peter keeping within close proximity to us in their camper van while we are walking so we expect that they will be able to meet up with us periodically, listen to our grizzles and send son our way again. Having them handy will help where there are harbour and river crossings as they will hopefully give us a ride and we also think that we will cycle some of the road sections.

With less than 100 days to go the excitement grows and so watch this space or Facebook to hear how we get along.
We are on a bit of a roll with these books and so making hay while we have the time. Once I get back to work full time, which should be within the next few weeks, I'm sure the progress will slow down.
This one is about the time we spent in Australia driving road trains.
Click the link below to check it out. We did it to see what it comes up like as there are potentially more stories to follow. The link does go to an ebook store (but it's free) and we have been able to download the book to ibooks to read.
We spent last weekend revisiting some favourite spots on the Coromandel Peninsular and also discovering places that we had not been to before. We left Tauranga on Friday and spent our first night at the Wentworth Valley DOC camp, a place we have been to before. Its lovely and quiet, tucked up at the end of the valley amongst the bush and we were there on our own. On Saturday we headed north through Hikuai, Pauanui and Tairua then Hahei and Hot Water Beach before stopping for the night in a motor camp in Whitianga. Sunday we checked out Matapouri and Whangapoua then headed over the hill to Coromandel where we stopped for lunch and a quiet time in the sun at Te Kouma harbour. The spot where we both previously kept our boats moored and had many wonderful memories of weekends there with Carey and Fausett families. We stopped the night in Coromandel after buying delicious smoked mussels and scollops from Bronwyn at Coromandel Smokehouse. We called in to see Rolly and Jeanette on our way through Te Puru on Monday but missed Rolly as he was out fishing.
Literally a fantastic trip, beautiful scenery, wonderful weather and Mervan (our camper) went really well. The photos above are in order - leaving the DOC camp in the Wentworth Valley, fishermen at Tairua, Hahei beach x2, Whitianga.W and W Careyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14651171642287930684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1564448790403824626.post-7935982340779159262014-08-07T14:21:00.001+12:002014-08-07T14:21:45.934+12:00BonesWell here we are again, off work and recovering from a fractured T12 vertebrae. A compression fracture from falling off the bike nearly 4 weeks ago. It was a slow pace gentle ride along what turned out to be a slippery board walk. Warren fell from his bike just behind me and in doing so knocked my back wheel tipping me off onto my butt. The impact produced the fracture mentioned above. Why again? Last November I managed a multi part fracture of my proximal humerus. These are nasty fractures and often take a year to heal but I've been crowing that the recovery has been quicker than that and was back on my bike after 12 weeks. Initially being a bit timid but latterly back to my pre-fracture confidence. I'll not crow this time.

Unfortunately this injury has meant we needed to cancel the 3 week South Island holiday that we had planned to start 26 July but we think we will probably head down there sometime around Easter next year. Looking at the weather forecast we may not have achieved much mountain biking as its been cold, wet and windy but it would have been nice to catch up with family.

This weekend we will need to crack open a wine to celebrate our 20 years together. This time 20 years ago we were sailing home from a 3 month journey to Fiji not realising that our worlds were about to change in a big way. We were home less than a week when we decided to head back to the boat 'Scot Free' and then began permanent life aboard in Auckland's Westport Marina. We both managed to get work in Auckland. Warren briefly as a caretaker for a Motel in Parnell, then as a driver with the Yellow Bus Company and I scored a Charge Nurse Manager role at Auckland City Hospital. The rest, as they say, is history!
We came to Tauranga for a year and here we are two and a half years later. Trapped in a lovely city with a really nice climate. We still love our Mack motorhome but over the last 2 years we've managed to get ourselves a camper for the weekends. Originally we started with a Nissan Homy van, then moved to a Ford Transit 2 berth camper and now we spend our weekends in a Mercedes 4 berth camper van. The van (Mer-van, Merv for short) gets us out to the mountain biking tracks and bike trails that we love and so over the next while we will endeavour to upload some photos to prove it!W and W Careyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14651171642287930684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1564448790403824626.post-30461661502143620662014-06-26T19:40:00.000+12:002014-06-26T19:40:20.273+12:00Lightening

Well it’s been a while but with the blog site updating I needed to spend some time figuring it out and reluctant to use 3G internet access for problem solving. That’s the excuse anyway but maybe I am just being a bit lazy.

We have been in Tauranga now 5 months and finding the weather very appealing. Work is going well for me and it’s nice being near family for a while. It was surprising to find how little we knew about Tauranga despite visiting here over many years. We are enjoying exploring locally finding local cycle tracks and beaches. We have even climbed The Mount. Last weekend we cycled the Waikino to Paeroa portion of the Hauraki cycle trail and will go back to complete the Thames and Te Aroha portion sometime soon. But the biggest change for us has been the purchase of a camper van. Yes, a Nissan Homy which will allow us to get about on the weekends to those spots that DREEEM won’t get to. It still needs a bit of work but Warren is busy now fitting it out for camping.

We attended the Motorhome rally at Mount Maunaganui at Easter weekend and enjoyed the 4 days and in particular the 4 nights of live entertainment. There were 1600 people there in 800+ vans so it was really well supported. While there we were interviewed by Robyn Dallimore from RV Lifestyle magazine. Watch out for the July/August edition for a story on us!

It’s the start of another work week and life is settling down to a pattern. Five days of work then 2 days to explore the Bay of Plenty. We have visited Tauranga many times over the years on a reasonably regular basis but we are still amazed at how little we know of the area. We spent one weekend with Sue and Peter camping at Pikowai, or should I say glamping – we took our motorhome down so had all the home comforts. Sadly the fishing was not great but we enjoyed the weekend as the weather was mild and of course the beach spectacular. It is a lovely long sandy beach sparsely populated and great for walks.

Pikowai is on the way to Whakatane and neither of us had been to Whakatane for many years so we took advantage of a work opportunity to visit briefly one afternoon. It is nothing like either of us remember, far more developed and attractive. We will have to return to have a better look around.

We have discovered some nice cycle pathways around the city, (Tauranga and the Mount) which we have spent some time on and I have the pleasure of a waterside walkway as part of the walk to work each morning. Our exploration of the mount was during the three days that we were based there while we had an awning built to fit DREEEM. The awning has been tweaked a bit by Warren to make it a firm fitting and it certainly proved stable in the winds that we had last Friday and Saturday. To top it off we now have a plywood flooring in the awning as well so we are really very well set up for winter when it comes.

Yesterday we visited the Motorhome show in Hamilton and came back with a backing camera for DREEEM and a solution to the high pressure toilet flush that tends to wash your feet when flushing. We found it quite a different experience visiting the show as full time motorhomers rather than potential buyers. The show was great with lots of interesting stalls and a large number of motorhomes and campers to view. We are still very pleased with our own, there is none better in our mind.
W and W Careyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14651171642287930684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1564448790403824626.post-61717126605646879022012-01-17T14:13:00.000+13:002012-01-17T14:13:10.723+13:00TaurangaOur plans changed, as they can and we made an earlier than planned trip to Tauranga. Mum toppled to the floor and needed help so with that being the priority we left Invercargill on Friday 6th January and headed north. Luckily we were able to meet up with Tony and Claire in Oamaru, along with Claire's dad and Jane and we spent a lovely evening together. Saturday saw us up to the Riverlands Roadhouse at Blenheim, then we crossed the strait on Sunday and came up as far as Wairaki before arriving in Tauranga on Monday morning.
We are currently based in the Tauranga Tourist Park and will probably stay here as the location suits us well. Just 5kms to Mum's and probably a 10 minute walk to the hospital for work.
As the sudden departure from Invercargill didn't allow time for hand over or goodbyes I will be returning there for a few days before starting the new job and although the mid 20's is a pleasant temperature, the desire to go back to Invercargill remains there. For now that will be satisfied with a short trip but I'm sure we will be back down that way some time in the future.
DREEEM went well, we had no problems apart from Warren's moment of alarm as we pulled our ears in and ducked our head going through the 4.25m tunnel at Kaikoura. We measure 4.2m so really we had room to spare! Tomorrow we are going to get a spare room. The awning on the side is going to be closed in which will give us an outdoor space. It will be nice in summer but really we want it for the winters. An outdoor space to change from wet coats and boots will be very useful. We managed well last winter despite 3 snowfalls but plan to be living in DREEEM for a long while yet so will get the job done now.W and W Careyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14651171642287930684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1564448790403824626.post-31724171196180865702011-12-26T20:30:00.000+13:002011-12-26T20:30:07.388+13:00Xmas in Arrowtown/Queenstown

We have been able to spend some good time with Pauline and Rob and their families and we have also managed to get out and enjoy this blissfully perfect weather. Too hot for some but a very pleasant summer for us.
We were thrilled to be given a helicopter flight br Rob and Tetli as a thank you to Warren for the help he gave them building their house. We flew up onto the snowy mountain where we stopped off for a little while. We flew back to Queenstown over Lake Moke which is in one of the photo's above.
In the few days here we have paddled on Lake Hayes, walked around Lake Hayes, cycled along Arrowtown river and up towards Macetown and also cycled around Moke Lake. It feels like a glorious summer holiday.
On Xmas day we managed to talk to family who were not here with us and that was also great.
I have also just had confirmation that the position I applied for in Tauranga is going to go ahead so at the end of January we will be back behind the wheel of DREEEM (now complete with a peice of wood on the accelerator for short legs) and heading back north. The new position (Project Manager)starts mid February and is a one year contract so we will enjoy the Bay of Plenty for a year and being located near the Tauranga family.
The only drama of note in the last few days was loosing all our air in DREEEM on our way into Queenstown on the Friday afternoon before Xmas. We were lucky that it happened once we had reached Frankton and not on the Devils staircase around the lake edge and we were also lucky that there was a sober diesel mechanic who was able to reconnect a dislodged airline on the side of the road. We are planning to head down to Niagara Falls for New Year so will be back in touch after that.W and W Careyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14651171642287930684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1564448790403824626.post-80641476009606166312011-12-20T19:36:00.000+13:002011-12-20T19:36:20.758+13:00Merry XmasMerry Xmas everyone. Let's hope it's a safe and enjoyable one for all. We are spending this Christmas with Pauline and Rob and their families in Arrowtown and then plan to move off to explore a bit more of the Central Otago region.
DREEEM has a block of wood on the accelerator now to allow me a more comfortable sitting position. I was given short leg genes I think.
We plan to be away from this Friday til after New Year and should be back in touch then.
Roll on January and a visit from Tony and Claire!W and W Careyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14651171642287930684noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1564448790403824626.post-39151670258643648212011-12-11T17:05:00.001+13:002011-12-11T17:41:04.380+13:00First Rally

Thanks Southland division of the NZ Motor Caravan Association for making our first rally outing a great one.

We have just returned “home” from a weekend away at the NZMCA Park over property (POP) at Niagara. It’s been a good weather weekend and the rally was our first since we have been down here. Yes, we’ve been here nearly a year but to be fair we were unable to move from our winter pad due to the ground being too wet and soft, then of course it took a few weeks to get our COF. Never mind, they say better to start late than not to start at all.

There were over 20 motor homes attending the 3 day rally and it was a good chance for us to meet other motorhomers from down here in the south. As with all people we have met and interacted with here they were very welcoming and friendly. We spent much of the weekend meeting and talking to new friends. Morning teas, raffles and happy hours took up the day time and in the evenings we sat around an outdoor fire built in a converted diesel tank.

Only 2 weeks til Xmas break which will see us heading up to Queenstown and thereabouts for about 10 days. Not that we are really motorbike enthusiasts but it’s hard not to get caught up in the hype of it all and we actually found the racing quite exciting. Sadly the beach race was cancelled due to gale force winds. Yes, it is still wet and windy down here much of the time. Yesterday however was a nice calm day and the street racing at Wyndham was well attended and there were a few spectacular crashes as you will see in the photo’s. (Coming soon)
We are still based at the Amble on Inn Motor camp as the ground is still quite wet and soft where we were previously. In the interim we are making the most of the closer proximity to town and spending a bit of time biking and walking, weather permitting of course. We have only 2 months left on this work contract at Southland Hospital and at this stage don’t have plans for what we do after that. There are work options here but we have made no commitment yet. Yes, you got it, ….the weather!W and W Careyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14651171642287930684noreply@blogger.com0
